Srila Prabhupada Vyasa Puja 2015

Celebrations at Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir

Srila Prabhupada Vyasa Puja 2015

Monday September 7 2015
Every year the appearance day of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness is celebrated in ISKCON Temples as Vyasa Puja. This year the event was celebrated on Monday, September 7, 2015 at Vrindavan Chandrodaya Mandir.

Why the Festival is called Vyasa Puja

Srila Prabhupada Vyasa Puja 2015

Lord Krishna is the origin of the Vedas. Lord Veda Vyasa is an incarnation of Lord Krishna who presented Vedic knowledge in written form at the advent of Kali Yuga around five thousand years ago. He appointed sages for propagating different branches of this knowledge in society. He is hence recognized as the original guru in enlightened spiritual circles.

Vedic knowledge is learnt in a system called parampara or disciplic chain. A guru is someone who is realized in the knowledge of the spiritual self, of the Supreme spirit, God and of the eternal relationship between them. He imparts that knowledge to his disciples and appoints some of the learned ones to succeed him as gurus. This chain continues with the next gurus appointing their deserving disciples to become gurus.

Since Veda Vyasa is the original guru, disciples celebrate the appearance day of their guru as Vyasa Puja because the guru is always a representative of Veda Vyasa in accordance with the parampara system of education.

Tradition of Written Offerings

It is an abiding tradition in the gaudiya parampara system coming down from Lord Chaitanya, to write offerings of glorification of guru and then read them on the occasion of his birth anniversary as a mark of gratitude and appreciation for the guru’s mercy in guiding the disciples.
