How to observe ekadasi as per Srila Prabhupada’s instructions ?

Ekadasi is a powerful opportunity for us, the souls trapped in material existence, to perform recommended austerities and make our way back to our original home in the spiritual sky. The spiritual atmosphere is infused with selfless devotional feelings of the pure souls for Lord Krishna and His devotees. Enlightened humans should make best use of the opportunity to invigorate in themselves, this pure Vaikuntha consciousness transcendental to the debilitating impurities of the material atmosphere. His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has given some simple principles for observing all Ekadasis   “One should observe fasting on Ekadasi day, the eleventh day after the full moon and the eleventh…

    Lord Caitanya Delivers Buddhists

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a scholar par excellence. On His tour to south India, Mahaprabhu defeated many types of philosophers by sound logic and converted them to Vaishnavism. The case of the defeat of some Buddhists by Mahaprabhu is a typical example. The Buddhist cult is established on the basis of argument and logic. They have two ways of understanding philosophy – Hīnāyāna and Mahāyānaā. They have nine chief principles: 1) The creation is eternal; therefore there is no need to accept a creator. (2) This cosmic manifestation is false. (3) “I am” is the truth. (4) There is the repetition of birth and death. (5) Lord Buddha is the…

Early Pastimes of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

Appearance of Lord Chaitanya When Lord decides to take his birth on earth, first he sends the incarnations of his respectable predecessors such as his father, mother and spiritual master. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took his birth on the full moon night of phalguna masa in the year 1486 (CE). He was the tenth child of Srimati Saci-Devi and Sri Jagannath Misra. They named him Nimai. He appeared in a town in the Nadiya distrct of Bengal, in the region of Navadvipa called Mayapur. Understanding Nityananda Tattva

Pañca–tattva Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is considered the most magnanimous of all incarnations of Lord Sri Krishna, since He freely distributed the most valuable wealth, the love of Godhead or Krishna-prema. He is always accompanied by other tattvas – His plenary expansion Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu, His incarnation Śrī Advaita Prabhu, His internal potency Śrī Gadādhara Prabhu and His marginal potency Śrīvāsa Prabhu. He is in the midst of them as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.  Spiritually there are no differences between these five tattvas, for on the transcendental platform everything is absolute. Yet there are also varieties in the spiritual world, and in order to taste these spiritual varieties (rasas) one should distinguish between them.In spiritually distinguishing between them…

    Yoga in Action

Living beings are constantly active – Animals, plants, humans et al. The material atmosphere induces struggle. A delicate balance sustains the various spheres of existence. It brooks no excess. Either of the body or the mind, happiness is a fragile harmony of vulnerable factors. Living beings seeking fulfilment in the material realm strive hard without assurance of success. Uncertainty brings anxiety and success little satisfaction. This is the saga of the soul wishing to express his inborn, joyful freedom in a severely constricting environment. The stringent laws of Karma that govern every action impose reactions, which unfold with the inexorable passage of time. The wily material energy keeps the soul…

Deceit in the Realm of Conviction

Everyone lives by convictions. A belief system of right and wrong prevails in every society of humans. Usually not expressly stated , rules of proper conduct guide the actions of most. Principles like honesty, respect, gratitude, and politeness are instilled from the very childhood. Most people oblivious to the notion of transcendence cannot exceed the mundane in deciding propriety. Given the choice of building a temple or offering food in charity they would decidedly choose the latter. Spiritual identity and the treacherous journey out of the dense forest of materialistic bondage is inconsequential to most as Maya predominates every direction of thought with powerful but false material convictions. The consequence of…

    Leaving This World

Consciousness at the critical moment The soul is eternal. Bodies are dresses that the soul accepts and discards. Each body creates a compelling scenario of existence. In the menagerie of life, the soul identifies with a species, forms relationships, struggles to exist and eke out happiness in a challenging environment. In each body, he forgets that he is the soul and that the body just a perishable dress. His thinking circumscribed within the bodily conception causes future bodies. Lord Krishna indicates that the embodied soul’s mentality is like fragrance in the air. It carries him from one body to the next. “The living entity in the material world carries his…

    Disempowering False Ego

Materialistic Tendency The materialistic conception impels a living being to assert himself in different contexts of life. When everyone is conducted by the same impulse, a strong, envious, negativity pervades the environment which self-propagates as people respond to it. Dominance becomes the standard for success. Life transforms into a constant struggle punctuated by successes and failures in heinous attempts to prevail. In such a state the heart is flooded with ungodly thoughts, feelings and intentions-the instruments for survival in embattled circumstances. These are the workings of a typical mundane community, delicately held together by a threadbare fabric called civility. The Spiritual Society The spiritual world is an entirely different society.…

The Voyage of Compassion: Srila Prabhupada Reaches the Shores of America

The arduous sea journey of Srila Prabhupada to fulfil the order of his spiritual master of spreading Krishna Consciousness in the western world was a great austerity for the exalted Acharya. The heavy seas and gigantic waves caused immense discomfort to Srila Prabhupada. On the thirteenth and fourteenth days of that voyage, as the ship plied over the Arabian sea, he underwent two heart attacks experiencing sharp pain in his chest. At his age, to tolerate such agony was virtually impossible. Yet, his unshakable faith in Lord Krishna helped him sail through the crisis. After 14 days, when the Jaladuta entered the Atlantic Ocean, they found it unusually calm. It…
