Mahalaya Amavasya marks the beginning of the 10-day Dussehra celebrations.
This festival, also known as the Sarva Pitru Amavasya, is the culmination of the
pitrupaksha according to the Hindu calendar. It occurs on the 25 th of
September this year.
Mahalaya Amavasya is dedicated to the ancestors of every household. People
all over India offer homage to their forefathers on this day. Rituals like shradh
and tarpan are conducted for the departed souls on the banks of holy rivers
